White wine in the Palatinate is still carrying the market, while red wine remains harder to place and rosé orders are only sporadic, according to the latest Fasswein price report from the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture dated May 18. The chamber said business is continuing, but only at a modest pace, and that quality remains decisive. If the grapes are not sound, it is difficult to move wine at all, the report said, underscoring the importance of vineyard protection during the growing season to produce healthy fruit.
Buyers are taking white wines for glühwein and mixed drinks across all quality levels at 30-35 €/hl, prices the chamber described as not covering costs. In the white-wine segment, the report listed a broad range of offers depending on variety and quality. Generic white wine was quoted at 40-50 €/hl for lower-quality lots and around 50 €/hl for Landwein. Riesling was shown at 60-70 €/hl for Landwein and 70-80 €/hl for quality wine, while Silvaner and Kerner were listed at 50-60 €/hl. Chardonnay appeared at 60 €/hl and also at 70-80 €/hl depending on quality, Grauburgunder at 100-110 €/hl, Gewürztraminer at 100-110 €/hl, Sauvignon blanc from 100 €/hl and Gelber Muskateller from 90 €/hl.
For rosé and Weißherbst, the report showed only limited activity. Portugieser for rosé was listed without a firm price in the table, reflecting the chamber’s note that orders are coming in only occasionally. The red-wine market was described as significantly weaker. Generic red wine was quoted at 30-35 €/hl for lower-quality lots, while Dornfelder blended with Grauburgunder was listed for quality wine without a fixed price in the table. Spätburgunder stood out as one of the few red wines with a clearer range, at 60-90 €/hl depending on quality.
The chamber’s report is closely watched by growers and buyers in Rhineland-Palatinate because it gives an early signal on demand and margins in one of Germany’s main wine regions. The current picture points to steady but limited demand for white wines, pressure on red wines and little momentum yet in rosé. Winemakers, the report said, are waiting for more business to pick up.
